Situated on Castle Hill overlooking the harbour, Newhaven Fort is a large 19th-century coastal fortress and museum that makes for an engaging family day out. Built between 1864 and 1871 to defend the port of Newhaven, it later played a key role in both world wars and has since been restored and adapted into a visitor attraction with exhibitions and activities that bring its history to life.

📅 Practical info

• Open seasonally from around mid-February to early November, daily from about 10 am to 5 pm with last admission typically at 4 pm.
• Tickets are valid for repeat visits during the season if booked in advance.
• Dogs on short leads are welcome around the outdoor areas (assistance dogs permitted in the café).

♿ Accessibility

Most areas of the fort and exhibitions are wheelchair accessible, and there are accessible toilets and some free mobility scooter hire available, though sections such as tunnels and ramparts can be uneven.

Newhaven Fort offers a blend of outdoor exploration, military history and family-friendly activity just a short drive from Eastbourne.
