Supporting residents, families and businesses across the county, East Sussex County Council delivers many of the essential public services that shape everyday life. Based at County Hall in Lewes, it works county-wide to provide strategic services that sit above district and borough level.

What it is responsible for

East Sussex County Council manages services that operate across the whole county, including

• Adult social care and public health
• Children’s services, education support and safeguarding
• Roads, highways maintenance and transport planning
• Libraries and community services
• Trading standards and consumer protection
• Registration services for births, deaths and marriages
• Waste disposal and recycling centres

These services are different from those provided by district and borough councils such as Eastbourne Borough Council, which handle housing, planning applications, council tax and bin collections.

How it works

Councillors are elected to represent divisions across East Sussex and set priorities and budgets for the authority. The council operates within a statutory framework and publishes details of meetings, decisions and service updates on its website.

For full service information, residents and businesses can visit the official East Sussex County Council website.
