Flood resilience and environmental research in Eastbourne and southern Wealden are being advanced through Blue Heart, an innovative project exploring how water moves through the local landscape and how communities can better prepare for flooding.

💧 What to expect

• Research into rainfall, rivers, groundwater and wastewater systems
• Smart technology monitoring water levels in real time
• Early flood warning and drainage management systems
• Collaboration with organisations responsible for water management
• Community engagement with people connected to local green and blue spaces

Blue Heart is designed to improve understanding of how different types of water interact across the Eastbourne and southern Wealden area. By combining scientific research, technology and local knowledge, the project aims to help predict flooding risks and develop practical ways to reduce their impact on people, businesses and the environment.

The project is funded by Defra as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes, managed by the Environment Agency. Running until spring 2027, the programme supports new approaches that strengthen flood resilience and help communities adapt to changing climate conditions.
