Baby dropping does not denote that your baby was dropped in the ground. It simply means that your baby has come to the lower portion of your belly. This usually happens during the last trimester of any pregnancy.

When a baby drops, it means the baby has come closer to your pelvic region and is close to your pelvic bones. Although babies usually grow in the feats with their head in the upwards direction, after dropping the baby's head points downwards so that the delivery becomes easier.

Baby dropping indicates that you are approaching the time of your labour. People also call it lightening. It usually starts a few weeks before the labour. But not in every case. In certain cases, the baby drops only before labour.  Often women experience the clearer signs of baby dropping at 33 weeks of their pregnancy.

How does the baby progress to labour

A baby's head remains in different positions during different stages of pregnancy. There is a total of eleven stages that describes the dropped position of your baby.

The highest station is (-5) which means that your baby’ head is still above your hips. Then it comes to Respectively (-4) station and station -3 pregnancy with time. Usually, mothers notice the dropping from the stage (-1) to stage zero.

The babies move downwards as time progresses with stages (+2), (+3) and (+4) means you may get your labour within a week. The labour starts after the baby reaches (+5) stage.

But not every baby follows this movement. Once the baby can drop to (+1) position and then come back to (-1) position in a week. Babies need constant monitoring through different tests so that the labour time can be predicted.

Signs of baby dropping

The truth is there are no clear signs that indicate baby dropping. Some women can feel the slightest drop and some may not feel at all. Sometimes, your baby may not drop until your labour begins. Baby dropping is comparatively clearer in the first pregnancy. Often women with second or third pregnancy may not notice the dropping.

But still, certain signs indicated that your baby has come downwards

  • You breathing becomes easier: As the baby drops towards your pelvis, your diaphragm starts to get less pressure. This allows you to breathe easily.
  • Increased mucus discharge: The baby drops with their head pointing downwards. With each stage, the head of the baby comes closer to the mother's cervix. This makes your cervix thinner and dilates so that it prepares for the labour.  The cervix becomes thinner by shedding the mucus plug that works like a stopper for the cervical opening. You will notice more discharge if your baby drops.
  • You may feel a lot of pressure in your pelvic region

The baby drops near your pelvis and adjusts itself inside your pelvis. This means you will feel a lot of pressure in your pelvic region. If you want to understand it in simpler terms, then imagine walking with a heavy object between your legs. This sign becomes more visible in the advanced stages of pregnancy.

Baby dropping is a normal incident and you do not need to worry about it that much. Relax and enjoy so that you can give birth to a healthy baby.
