Christmas Tree collections

If you opt for a real Christmas tree this year, do not forget to take it to one of Croydon's Council's designated recycling collection points between Sunday 2nd and Sunday 9th January 2011. Make sure you remove all tinsel and decorations before you take it to be recycled... that would be a sad end for a fairy!

Prevention is better than cure!

At Christmas, we all want to enjoy ourselves, but the amount of food we throw away and the money wasted in the process can be horrifying, and lets face it, a bit shameful. However, there are creative ways we can cater for the festive season without a large percentage of it ending up in the bin.

Simple measures like making food shopping lists, adopting better portion control, and storing food correctly will all help avoid food waste, helping to cut the cost of Christmas.

If you do find you've gone over the top, deal with it before things have to be thrown. Be realistic about what you can actually eat before the use by date and freeze what you can. For non-freezable items, there's likely to be someone - or even a local shelter or housing charity - who might be very grateful for free treats.

Then there are the leftovers - turkey sandwiches and bubble and squeak can hardly be described as ground breaking. Visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for recipe ideas with a touch more imagination. The site also has a portion calculator to help prevent overbuying in the first place.
