London Congestion Charge changes are on the way, coming into force on 1 July 2013. Giles Bell from DriveBuy Cars tells us what to expect:
Transport for London (TfL) is abolishing the existing Greener Vehicle Discount valid for cars with emissions of less than 100g per km of CO2 from 2015. These motorists currently receive a 100% discount on the congestion charge but unfortunately, this huge benefit isn't set to last once the discount is abolished. TfL have allowed a "sunset period" of 3 years for those motorists who currently receive the discount, before they will need to start paying the full congestion charge.
So it makes sense to take advantage of this grace period. If you register your low emissions car for the Green Vehicle Discount by the 28 June 2013 deadline, you’ll qualify for a 100% discount on the Congestion Charge until June 2016.
Initially introduced to reduce the level of gridlocked traffic on Central London roads, the London Congestion Charge has had a contraversial history. A spokesman for London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "These changes are in line with the mayor's aim to improve air quality in London by reducing emissions from private vehicles and promoting the further development of low emission vehicles."
