Making sure your property is Winter ready.

It certainly feels like Winter is on its way, so it's time to make sure you property is ready for those lower temperatures.

That means booking in a boiler service, lagging the pipes and making sure there's no minor structural damage to your property.

Here's a handy guide from Man About the House and Garden in Croydon on just what you should be doing right now:

  • Make sure your CO2 and smoke alarms are in good working order - test that they're working and if not, get the batteries replaced.
  • Heating is the top concern when it's cold out there, so check that your radiators are in good working order. If any radiators are cold at the top and hot at the bottom, then they need bleeding (this should be done regularly to maintain them). Before you begin, ensure your central heating is off and you protect any flooring underneath the radiator as the water that leaks can be incredibly dirty!
  • If your central heating is operated by oil or LPG, make sure it's full. The last thing you need is for a "snow day" when your tank is empty!
  • Do you know where your stop cock is? Unfortunately burst pipes are common in extreme temperatues so make sure you know where your stop cock is so you can turn the water supply off as soon as it happens.
  • Now that the autumn leaf drop is over, it's time to get your gutters and drains cleared.
  • If you have a wood burner or open fire you need to get it swept at least once a year, even if you don't use the fire much.
  • Having an easily accessible emergency kit is always a great idea, that way should you get a power cut, you have what you need to hand. Include candles, matches, logs for the fire, salt for the paths, and so on.
