Essex County Council and Colchester Borough Council have been working together on the Better Town Centre programme for Colchester, with a number of plans for improvements and regeneration in order to make the town an even better place to live, work, learn and visit. And of course, it goes without saying that developing and promoting sustainable travel options and making it easier for people to get into and around Colchester is an essential part of this vision.

With this in mind, Monday 30th July 2012 saw work start on a new, high quality bus station in Colchester town centre, which it is hoped, will reduce traffic in the town.

Located on Osborne Street and Stanwell Street, the new facility will include:

  • A secure, covered, well-lit passenger waiting area

  • Passenger seating

  • Toilets

  • Information on the local area and journey planning

These new developments have been meticulously planned to minimise disruption to Colchester’s residents, businesses and visitors, and Essex County Council and Colchester Borough Council will be providing regular updates on the work and anything that may cause any delays to everyone accessing the town centre.

Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways & Transportation, and County Councillor Derrick Louis, commented, "I am pleased that work is about to start on Colchester's new bus station. Through our partnership working with Colchester Borough Council we have developed a facility which will make it easier for residents to travel by bus, and help to reduce traffic around the town centre."

Colchester’s new town centre bus station is just one of a number of recent improvements to the town’s public travel infrastructure; bus stops and passenger information have already been improved on the High Street, Head Street and St Johns Street, and new stops have been added.

There will also be further upgrades throughout Colchester in the near future, including Queen Street.
