October is here and with it comes the ghosts and ghouls... that's right, we're getting closer to Halloween!

Colchester has a selection of spookily-themed events taking place to celebrate the most frightening day of the year...

Do you have a bit of a sweet tooth? The Chocolate Studio on Moorside Business Park, Colchester is holding a Halloween Chocolate Event, which includes a chocolate making demo (scary spiders and creepy bats made of chocolate!) as well as a hands-in event.

The workshop takes place from Saturday 20th October until Sunday 4th November.

Alternatively, if you don't scare easily, come along to High Woods Country Park at 7pm on Friday 26th October and take part in Halloween Super Sleuthing. Meet the detective at the Visitor Centre and follow the clues in your quest to find and destroy the Ultimate Evil Force and save the world!

Please note that the latter stages of the trail are quite scary and as the event takes place at night, it not suitable for young children.

Teams of 4-10 people; please bring a phone and torch; the event lasts approximately 1 hour.

Tickets cost £3 per adult and £2 per child and can only be purchased via the Visitor Information Centre – please either call 01206 282 920 (£2 administration charge per overall purchase) or pop in in person to VIC, 1 Queen Street, Colchester CO1 2PG.

Of course, the littles ones shouldn't be left out of the fun! Luckily, High Woods Country Park has come to the rescue, and on Sunday 28th October, from 11am until 3pm, is holding a Halloween Self-Guided Fun Trail, which is suitable for children aged 4 and above. There is no need to book – simply turn up, follow the map around the Colchester park and try to solve the clues.

Maps cost just 50p and are available from the Visitor Centre but are free if you come in costume!

Now it's time for something a little different. As part of firstsite's free family Saturdays, they are putting on 'Halloween Vegetables can be Quite Surprising with the Flaming Tomatoes' (yes you did read that right!) Happening from 11am until 1pm or 2pm until 4pm on Saturday 3rd November, it falls between Halloween and Bonfire Night, so families with children aged between 3 and 11 can take part in some madcap activities with veggies and flames!

There will be the obligatory pumpkins and other carvable vegetables, and stunts and a twilight performance courtesy of the Flaming Tomatoes.

This event is free but donations are welcomed.

Firstsite, Lewis Gardens, High Street, Colchester, Essex CO1 1UE.
