The Street Name Plates of Southwark
🗓 18 February | 7–9pm
📍 Disney Place, London SE1 (1 min from Borough Tube)

Did you know Southwark’s street signs tell incredible stories about London’s past?

Join us for an Intellectual Discussion Night exploring the hidden history behind Southwark’s street name plates — from medieval lanes to Victorian cast iron signage and iconic London County Council enamel plates.

🎤 Guest Speaker: Simon Morris, publications secretary of the London Topographical Society, who has cycled over 3,000 miles across London documenting historic street name plates before they disappear through redevelopment.

In this illustrated talk, Simon will:
• Reveal how street names were chosen
• Show how signage reflected civic pride and power
• Share Southwark’s oldest, longest, strangest, and most puzzling street name plates
• Explore what these everyday objects tell us about local identity and urban change

🗣️ After the talk, we’ll open the floor for a group discussion on urban heritage and what deserves to be preserved in a constantly changing city.

🎟 Very limited spaces available – RSVP required
