Top Tips for Facial Aftercare

There are numerous reasons why we choose to go for a facial at a spa or salon, for relaxation, to indulge, to address skin complaints, to refresh our skin, to combat issues with acne, to reduce wrinkles, to prepare for a party and for some ‘me’ time.  With many different types of facial available at spas and salons, there’s something for every skin type.

Whilst the actual facial treatment can take anything from thirty minutes to an hour, how can we maintain the effects the treatment has had on our skin?  To get the best from your next facial, here are some aftercare tips for you to follow.

No Make Up – This would make most ladies take a sharp intake of breath at the sheer thought of no make-up, but it’s only for around twelve hours after your facial.  Therefore, if you’re extremely conscious about not being able to wear make-up, it might be better to book your facial to take place during an evening.  Keeping your skin make-up free after a facial will allow your skin to breath, absorbing the products that have been used.  Also, after a treatment your skin will be quite delicate and possibly slightly sensitive and your pores will be open too, applying make-up straight after a treatment could cause your pores to become blocked.

Products – During your facial, a beauty therapist may advise you on the types of products to use following the facial.  It is worth taking advice from them, as they will have received extensive training and will know all about the effects products can have on all skin types; they will also have the experience to identify any issues with your skin and offer ways in which to address them.  If they don’t offer this advice during your treatment, it’s worth asking them to advise you on what you should use on your skin to maintain the effects of the facial.

Sunlight – Skincare specialists and beauty therapists would always advise you to apply a moisturiser in the mornings which contains a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor), 15 or above.  This protects the skin from UV rays which are present even if the sun isn’t shining.  You should definitely try to avoid the sun immediately after a facial; the dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin will have been removed during your treatment, leaving your skin without them as a barrier against the sun.  That said, do not think that dead skin cells would give any protection against UV rays, the lack of them just means that your skin will be more sensitive.

Fluids – To take care of your skin, keep it well hydrated.  Wherever possible avoid drinking coffee or tea with caffeine and alcohol, because these can dehydrate you, leaving your skin looking dull and dry.  Instead drink plenty of water each day, around 1.5 to 2 litres, to hydrate your skin and give it a healthier glow.

Facials should be delivered to meet each person’s requirements to suit their skin type.  Offering facial care from acne treatment to line and wrinkle reduction, Aveda Face & Body Care is used by the Limes Beauty Company for facials to ensure their clients leave the salon looking and feeling great.
