What could be more pleasant on a sunny afternoon than a relaxing canal cruise on the beautiful Chesterfield Canal in a narrow boat, just gliding along the water at a slow and leisurely pace enjoying the scenery and wildlife?

Here at Chesterfield Canal Trust we are responsible for the promotion and restoration of the Chesterfield Canal, which is recognised as being one of the most varied waterways in England.

It runs for 46 miles from the River Trent to the centre of Chesterfield. Since 1989 11 miles of the canal have been successfully restored and there are only 9 miles left to restore. If you would like to get involved please visit our website for more information.

Canal Cruises

The John Varleynarrow boat was launched in 1992. It has a wheelchair lift and toilet. It has large opening windows, rear, front and side doors maximising fresh air and good views. There is a heater if it is cold, a galley providing hot and cold drinks and even a chiller. It is crewed by our trained Trust volunteers and all proceeds go towards the Restoration of the Chesterfield Canal.

Cruises on the John Varley narrow boat are ideal for;

  • Parties or groups,
  • Celebratory occasions,
  • Club outings,
  • Community Groups,
  • Business Away Days,
  • Educational Visits,
  • Family and Friends outings to enjoy some relaxing and quality time together.

You are welcome to bring your own picnic on board or we can stop at a canal side pub or the Coffee Shop at Hollingwood Hub. Buffets can also be arranged on the boat at very reasonable rates.

Charters can be booked for parties of up to 12 passengers for £36 per hour, minimum 2 hours.
