The J’s Hospice is one of the most ground-breaking charitable organisations in Chelmsford, providing important home care for young people with life limiting illnesses. Amongst the leading charities in the region, J’s Hospice is also raising money to build an ‘in patient’ facility which will be the first of its kind in the East of England.
It was the drive and vision of members of the local Chelmsford community, eager to see young adults with life limiting illnesses given enhanced support, that saw The J's Hospice emerging.
Understanding the need for young adults aged between 18 and 40 to have the choice to receive much needed care and support in their own homes, the J's Hospice is a charity that helps these young adults with the move from children's to adults' hospice services in Essex, by offering age appropriate care and support to bridge the gap.
With a small team of fully trained nurses and healthcare assistants, The J's Hospice works closely with the patient's GP and other carers to provide specialist advice and support and practical nursing care.
Why is this service needed?
The question that the founders of The J's Hospice charity asked was'what happens to young people with life limiting illnesses when they reach the age of 19?'
This is the age where they become too old to be cared for by children's hospital care and are discharged. Patients such as these are now living longer, thanks to the better treatment they now receive, and adult hospices may not be right for a younger patient despite their excellent work providing end of life symptom care.
It is nationally recognised that there is a lack of charities and charitable organisations offering age appropriate facilities for younger patients who can still be alert, lively funny and affectionate. These patients still enjoy and should be able to spend time with people of their own age whilst receiving medical nursing and emotional support until the end of their life. The J's philosophy is that life should be lived and enjoyed to the best of a person's ability.
The J's Hospice also offers bereavement support for the members of the patient's family.
Can You Help?
The next stage for The J's Hospice is to raise funds to build a dedicated facility for in-patient beds. The only stand-alone hospice of its kind in the East of England, The J's hopes to provide an environment that is both uplifting and supportive to encourage young people to live their lives to the full.
The J's is always looking out for people to help support their essential work. Whether this is by a simple, but valued donation, people to take part in or arrange fundraising events or to volunteer their time for the hospice itself in roles such as family support.
