Press Release from Cannock Chase Council
The figures show that in November 2014, 787 people were claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) compared to 1548 in January 2014 a drop of 49%. Unemployment in the District is now at an all-time low with just 1.2% of the population aged 16-64 claiming JSA. This compares to a peak rate of 5.4% (3425) during the last recession in April 2009.
Youth unemployment figures have also fallen with 205 claiming in November 2014 compared to 430 in January 2014, a 52% decrease.
Councillor Gordon Alcott, Portfolio Leader for Economic Development and Planning said “The figures are great news, they suggest that economy in the area is heading in the right direction. Businesses are taking on more staff, including many young people through apprenticeship schemes and training opportunities.
This was highlighted when local courier company APC Overnight based at Kingswood Lakeside in Cannock offered a lifeline to former City Link employees; when they agreed to make 100 jobs available at its national sorting office in Cannock, when City Link went into administration over Christmas.”
The previous lowest unemployment rate achieved was in October and November 2003 when the rate was 1.3%.
