Those affected need to receive care from friends and family and often lose the ability to attend work, often losing their earnings until they can return to work.

Adam Penn, senior associate and personal injury lawyer at Ansons Solicitors in Staffordshire, gives you his top 5 tips on making a claim for personal injury compensation.

1. Follow medical advice

The most important thing you can do is follow the advice of your medical team, not just for the obvious reasons but also because your case may be severely affected in addition.

2. Take legal advice

Seek legal advice if you think that you have been injured as a result of someone else’s negligence. The law allows you to recover compensation for your losses if you are injured through no fault of your own.

3. Be aware of the time limit for starting your claim

You have three years from the date of the accident (or in some cases the date of knowledge of your injuries) to issue court proceedings. It is absolutely vital that you seek legal advice at the very first opportunity and do not leave things until the last minute. At Ansons, we rarely take new cases after the second anniversary of the accident.

4. Keep a record of expenses

In order to recover your out of pocket expenses, keep a note of any expenses as they occur. Keep any documents proving your losses – receipts, vouchers etc. You may also recover the cost of transport to the medical appointments and you need to keep a diary of those visits.

5. Log care and assistance received

If family and friends have cared for you in any way, it is also possible for you to recover an amount for their time spent looking after you. Keep detailed records of any assistance received, diary entries will be invaluable and it is important to record all of your losses as they occur.

Victims of accidents can find claiming for their losses stressful, but at Ansons we try and remove as much of that anxiety as possible. Please contact Adam Penn on 01543 431196 or in order to see if you are able to make a claim for compensation.

Adam has over twenty years’ experience of dealing with accident claims and will guide you through the process. All work is conducted on a “no win no fee” basis so that if you lose your claim, you do not pay a penny towards costs.
