Construction contractor G F Tomlinson Building Ltd will start work at the leisure centre in Cannock on Tuesday 26th April.
Although both swimming pools at Chase Leisure will be closed from 24th April for up to 15 months, the modernisation project will be phased, which means the sports hall and fitness suite will remain open throughout.
The new fitness suite will be developed in one of the first phases of the construction and is expected to be available to the public in early 2012. All of the dry-side activities – including group exercise, badminton, football, health and fitness and indoor bowls – will continue to be available during the construction. Cannock Park Golf Course will also remain open throughout the project.
Every effort is being made to minimise the impact of the pool closure at the leisure centre. From 3rd May the weekly opening hours at Rugeley Leisure Centre will be increased to provide as much additional pool time as possible for the public and to accommodate swimming lessons.
All of the proposed works will help drive the Council’s on-going commitment to increasing physical activity levels across all age groups in the District, with particular emphasis on providing modern facilities that will meet customer expectations now and in the future.
The main pool at Chase Leisure Centre will be transformed into a six-lane, 25-metre competition-standard facility, with a moveable floor and boom also creating a variable-depth section. A new swimming pool changing village will be created, as well as a brand new fitness suite on the ground floor, with its own dedicated changing facilities. Space for spectators will be increased and the existing teaching pool refurbished.
