Cannock Chase Council tenants are looking forward to a rent-free fortnight this Christmas – if they are up to date with their rent payments.
Following a consultation with tenants, the Council’s housing department last year switched from two single rent-free weeks at Christmas and Easter to a rent-free fortnight at Christmas and New Year.
Council tenants pay their 52 weeks’ rent over a 50-week period, with the rent-free weeks this festive period being the weeks beginning Monday 27th December and 3rd January.
Cllr Phil Freeman, Cannock Chase Council Housing Leader, said:
“The majority of our tenants have clear rent accounts and those up to date with their rent will have up to an extra £140 in their pockets to meet some of those extra costs at Christmas.
“For those in arrears the rent-free fortnight is the time to clear or reduce their arrears. We work with the Chase Citizens’ Advice Bureau and have managed to reduce arrears and the number of families who lose their homes because of debt and arrears.
“Our employees always set realistic targets for the reduction of arrears and tenants in arrears are advised to contact the rents team as soon as they encounter any problems in paying their rent.”
Tenants have a number of ways of paying their rent, including a payment hotline on 0845 2340080, on the Council’s website at www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk and by direct debit.
