AS Chase MP I have started a public petition to the Environment Secretary, for Cannock Chase forest to be granted Heritage status by the Government as part of their consultation on the public forestry estate.
In the House of Commons I urged Defra ministers to recognise that Cannock Chase is as important to our nation's heritage as the other forests that the Government has named as worthy of 'heritage' status.
Now our campaign to persuade the Government of our case begins. I will be meeting regularly with my colleagues, Jeremy Lefroy in Stafford, Gavin Williamson in South Staffordshire, and Michael Fabricant in Lichfield, to co-ordinate our efforts and will welcome support from all other MPs in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. As part of our campaign, to demonstrate the strength of public support for our forest, we are inviting all of our constituents to sign the petition to Defra ministers, pressing them to grant heritage status.
The richness of the Chase's history and heritage is obvious to the thousands who visit and enjoy it every year. At a time when the national focus on England's forests has never been greater, my job is to make sure that the Government recognises our forest as one of the most important assets in our country's heritage.

Paper copies of the petition are also located in my MP Help Zone in Cannock.
