Recorded crime has dropped by almost four and a half per cent in the last year while anti-social behavior had been cut by a quarter.

According to a report by Cannock Chase Community Safety Partnership crimes committed in Cannock and Rugeley town centres are also down, with a 31per cent drop in reported incidents in Rugeley over the last 12 months.

Violent crimes causing less serious injuries have been cut by 47per cent over the same period for Rugeley town centre.

The partnership does recognise areas for improvement in their report, the ‘Cannock Chase Community Safety Strategic Assessment 2011’, with the level of violent crime above the county rate and static over the past four years.

Cllr George Adamson, Chair of the Responsible Authorities Group and Leader of Cannock Chase Council, said: “Results across the district are very encouraging and we are making a significant impact on key targets, such as reducing anti-social behaviour.

“These results, including a 4.4per cent fall in recorded crime, were recorded against a backdrop of proactively encouraging the reporting of crime, so were not simply a reflection of crime going unreported.

“We do face many challenges in the district, with many offenders coming from areas which fall within the top 20per cent most deprived areas in Britain.

“In addition, offenders often come from a background of drug misuse (28per cent) or have problems with accommodation (22per cent), the highest recorded in Staffordshire.

“We will continue to work in partnership across local authorities, the police and community groups to tackle issues around domestic violence and violent crime to make our district a safer place to live.

“As we have proved over the past 12 months, Cannock Chase is safer and we will do everything we can to combat crime and meet issues such as anti-social behaviour head-on.”
