Cannock Chase Council has warned people in the District to be on their guard after a resident was targeted in a Council Tax scam.
The resident – who lives on the Bevan Lee estate in Cannock – was called on Friday 3rd December by someone claiming to be the head of Council Tax for the Birmingham area. She was told that a Council Tax refund of £7,000 was owed to her and asked how she would like to be paid. The resident was rightly suspicious and did not divulge her bank details.
She was even given a phone number to call for more information – 020 3286 1358 – although the person was calling from an 0121 Birmingham code.
This number is connected to a postal address in Regent Street, London, and there have been numerous reports around the country of it being used as part of a Council Tax scam.
The resident reported the incident to Cannock Chase Council and the police, who are investigating.
