To show how much they value the work of their volunteers, the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team has launched a Volunteer of the Year Award.
The first Volunteer of the Year went to husband and wife duo, Fred and Glynis Ward, who have worked hard on behalf of the AONB.
From Brocton, the Wards are in their 60s and have taken part in lots of voluntary work, including litter picking, fixed point photography monitoring, clearing Himalayan Balsam, and helping to conduct the AONB’s visitor survey.
The winners were announced at a special celebratory barbeque, held at Beaudesert Park Farm in May. Thirty volunteers were there to see Fred and Glynis accept the Volunteer of the Year 2010 glass trophy.
Emma Beaman-Green for Cannock Chase AONB, said: “We function with the support of our fantastic volunteers, who give their time and energies to helping Cannock Chase AONB.
“We wanted to formally recognise the amazing work they do, so we decided to hold an award ceremony to say thank you collectively, and to award the person, or team, that has shown the most outstanding volunteer contribution to the AONB in the last year.
“We chose Fred and Glynis because they are always among the first to volunteer, no matter what, even if it’s the less than glamorous role of litter picking. Well done to both of them, and a huge thank you to all our volunteers.”
Glynis Ward said: “We were both very surprised to receive this award, as volunteer work comes as second nature to both of us.
“Being a volunteer for the AONB has helped us to visit parts of Cannock Chase that we would not usually see. And, through volunteering, we’ve also met lots of people who visit the Chase and learnt more about its heritage and the work of the AONB team.
“Giving our time freely helps us to pay back the privilege of living in such a beautiful area.”
