The Chase Line route between Birmingham and Rugeley, which also includes Cannock and Hednesford, now has the second highest passenger growth in the West Midlands.

Figures from the Office of Rail Regulation show a huge growth in passenger numbers between 2008/09 and 2009/10. Numbers at Cannock station rose 15%, by 1% at Hednesford, 12% at Rugeley Town and a huge 161% at Rugeley Trent Valley.

Cabinet agreed to provide funding at their meeting on 23rd June because of the vital importance to the District of rail links with Birmingham.

Cabinet also backed the High Speed Rail Network at their meeting and noted that links to Birmingham are vital for Cannock Chase District to share the expected economic benefits that HS2 will deliver, subject to the upgrade of the Chase Line and improved connectivity with Birmingham.

Centro now needs Cannock Chase Council and Staffordshire County Council to share the costs of continuing with the existing incremented services beyond December 2011.

Centro has asked both councils to share the costs, based on an ongoing contribution of £53,000 (25% of the total cost) per annum. The funding for these services is likely to be for three years and will come from the Council’s existing Rail Revenue Support Budget. Cannock Chase Council will contribute £9,000 per annum.

Cllr Gordon Alcott, Cannock Chase Council Economic Development and Planning Portfolio Holder, said: “The Chase Line rail service is absolutely vital to the economic growth and prosperity of Cannock Chase District.

“The funding package that Cabinet has agreed will ensure the Chase Line services for the next three years. This is essential.

“In the future we need improved rail connectivity with Birmingham, together with the upgrade of the Chase Line, and we’ll be working hard to achieve that through negotiations with the Department for Transport, London Midland, Centro, the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership and others.”
