Samuel, aged 17 and from Health Hayes, needs a lightweight wheelchair so he can get around more easily. He has been wheelchair-bound since he fell off his bike during a family holiday in 2009. Samuel’s mum Mandy Asbury said: “The wheelchair he has now is not only heavy but is uncomfortable for him.”
Pupils at Five Ways Primary School in Heath Hayes raised the first £168.15 towards the wheelchair and now a further £200 has been contributed by local entrepreneur Steve Mallows with funding from the Cannock Chase Business Awards.
Mr Mallows, who runs ‘thebestofcannock’ and established the business awards in partnership with Cannock Chase MP Aidan Burley, said: “We are very happy to raise awareness of local charities and – in our own small way – have a real affect on local people’s lives. The whole ethos of the awards was about keeping money in our area to help boost the local economy. The charities we have donated to are all part of that and have faced their own struggles because of the recession; we want to give back to them on a local level.”
Newlife Foundation Operations Manager Stephen Morgan added: “We are very grateful to the business awards’ organisers for their generous contribution towards one of our local funding appeals. Specialist equipment can help enable young people to realise their potential – and donations like this enable us to provide the sort of aids that can revolutionise young lives.” Newlife is looking to other local fundraising events to realise the remainder of the £3,154 cost of the wheelchair.
