In commemoration and celebration of Victoria Wood CBE, Eleanor Hill, Musical Director of the Bury community choir, Bury Acapeelers has penned an original and humorous song filled with nostalgia and admiration for the comedian, actress, musician, screenwriter, and director.

Bury born Victoria wrote many songs during her successful career, including the hilarious and well known ‘Barry & Freda (Let’s Do It)’. And to this date holds the record for the most TV BAFTAs in BAFTA history.

On Thursday 10 July 2025 at 7.30pm, the choir will be performing their song titled ‘Oh Victoria’ beside the statue of Victoria Wood in Church Gardens, off Silver Street / Manchester Road.

They are hoping for a fine evening and all are welcome. Afterwards, they invite you to join them for tea and buns at Blackburne Hall, a short walk away. Donations to Bury Hospice will be gratefully received.

Musical Director, Eleanor Hill commented “I wanted to write a song relevant to the choir and the town. Victoria Wood was such a talent and her work resonates with many of us, so she was an ideal subject. The song celebrates how funny she was and laments her loss”.

Bury Acapeelers is a non-audition, community choir and their doors are currently open to new members. It is widely accepted that singing in a choir offers a multitude of benefits for both physical and mental well-being. It can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood and foster a sense of community and belonging. It can even improve lung function, posture, and contribute to a longer life!

The choir’s motto is ‘Love Singing Love Life’, so if you think this is for you, feel free to get in touch using the link below or pop along in September when the choir returns from their summer break. Choir practice is held on Thursdays 7.30 – 9.30pm at Blackburne Hall at the back of Bury Parish Church. First practice of the new term will be Thursday 4 September.
