Last month's Dental Dilemmas by Synergy Dental Clinic answers what you should do following tooth extraction...

After having an extraction, it is important to make sure you rest as much as possible and avoid exercising.  Try to keep your head upright to avoid potential bleeding.

Until the anaesthetic wears off you will not be able to register pain properly, therefore you should avoid hot food and drinks so that you don’t burn or scald your mouth and be aware of chewing your cheek – this is quite common when you have no feeling.

Try not to rinse your mouth out in the first 24 hours as the socket needs time to heal.  After this time you can use a salt-water mouthwash.  Gently rinse around the area twice a day to help clean and heal the area.

Try not to eat on the extraction side as you can damage the blood clot and affect the healing process by getting an infection.

There can be slight bleeding in the first few days, but don’t rinse your mouth.  Instead, apply pressure to the socket by placing a clean folded cotton cloth over the socket and bite down for about 15 minutes.  If the bleeding has not stopped after an hour or two, contact your dentist.

Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours and avoid smoking as long as possible after your extraction as this can cause further bleeding and can raise your blood pressure, which will delay healing.

Do not take any aspirin and this can cause your mouth to bleed.  Always check with your doctor before taking any pain relief medication.
