Thrifty event organisers of this year’s Whitefield Halloween Festival have come up with the ingenious idea of using the leftovers from the children’s carvings.

150 pumpkins were donated at short notice by R Noone & Son, New Smithfield Market, Manchester when John Slattery, Treasurer of Whitefield Business Group put in a call having found out that the local supplier was unable to deliver on time.

The leftovers will be carefully collected and stored after the event, and added together with the remains of the giant pumpkin which has been provided by retired allotment holder Brian McElhinney from Seymour Grove Allotments. Brian was delighted to donate the giant pumpkin knowing it would help to feed the homeless and raise funds for local charity FareShare as people guessed its weight at the festival.

It was Peter Davys from Orrest and member of Whitefield Business Group who chose FareShare as beneficiary and 'charity of the year'. “FareShare is a local charity based in Openshaw who donate to over 50 beneficiaries in the local area. We are proud to be associated with the worthy cause that helps those in need.”

Anna Morrison, secretary of Whitefield Business Group and owner of The White Room has offered to make the soup on behalf of the charity. White Room’s head chef said, “The amber coloured velvety soup is a perfect low calorie meal which is filling and packed with flavour. A fantastic seasonal favourite, just what you need during the winter months.”
