As the same suggests, the 20th February it seems is the day to show your furry friend some affection, whether it be in the form of pampering or just cuddling.
To celebrate this day, we have compiled a list of random facts about our two most common household pets:

Dogs

  • Dogs are capable of understanding up to 250 words and gestures.
  • They have the intelligence of a two year old child and can count up to five.
  • Service dogs are trained to understand when it is time for work. When the harness is on, they are working, when it is off they are playful and energetic.
  • In ancient China, an emperor's last line of defence was a small Pekingese dog hidden up his sleeve.
  • The wetness of a dog's nose is important. It helps them identify the direction of smell.
  • Dogs drink water by forming a backward cup-like shape with their tongue.

Cats

  • Hyenas are related to cats.
  • Cat's urine glows in the dark under black light.
  • Sir Isaac Newton, the founder of gravity, invented the cat flap.
  • Cats see well at night because their eyes absorb light and then reflect it back in the dark.
  • Cats can make 100 vocal sounds, dogs can only make ten.
  • If a cat used their natural frequency to show humans affection it would be too low for us to pick up.
