Fitness fanatics at a Bury gym have been working up a sweat to help raise funds for the town’s new hospice.
Staff at DW Sports waived the fee for using its gym facilities on weekends throughout April, and instead asked customers to make a donation to the Building a new Hospice for Bury campaign, or provide an Easter egg for patients at the current hospice.
Sarah van der Merwe, who works at the gym on Angouleme Way Retail Park, said: “Bury Hospice is our chosen charity for the year and we have been looking at ways to raise cash for its new building.
“We decided to invite friends of our members to come and use the gym for free over the weekend. Instead of the usual £10 day pass for non-members we asked them to make a contribution to the hospice, or bring in an Easter egg for a current patient.
“It’s been very successful and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone that has supported us over the past couple of weeks.”
So far, DW Sports staff have raised more than £300 for the new hospice, and have handed over 25 Easter eggs to patients.
Bury Hospice has been located at its current site, on Dumers Lane Radcliffe, since being built in 1991.
The Building a new Hospice for Bury campaign has been launched to raise the £2.5million needed to build a new and improved hospice on Rochdale Old Road, that will provide better facilities and more beds for those in need of care across Bury.
Ruth Lane, Capital Appeal Fundraiser for Bury Hospice, said: “We’d like to thank everyone at DW Sports who took part in the fundraising event.
“It is great to see people keeping fit and raising money for such a good cause at the same time.
“The Easter eggs were a lovely gesture and were greatly received by the patients at the hospice.”
