As September draws to a close and we welcome October, it’s not just the weather that’s taken a frightful turn. As you may remember, last year we gave you a rundown of everything going on over the Halloween period and this year we’ve taken the time out to do the same. Anyone of a squeamish nature may want to close this blog now, however, for those, like us, who love a good scare, read on and find out what creepy capers you can embark on during the Halloween period.

Bury will be teaming with zombies, vampires, werewolves and plenty of other terrifying creatures come October 31st but that’s no reason to lock yourself indoors. We’ve combed the borough and beyond to bring you a comprehensive list of events and goings-on in Bury this Halloween!

Kicking us off this year is Whitefield Halloween Festival which runs from October 20th through to Halloween itself. With storytelling, lantern making, paranormal investigations, fortune telling, a 12ft dragon and pumpkin carving. There’s even a cider tent for the adults! The festival is sure to provide enough spooktacular fun to keep everyone entertained right up until the big day.

On the subject of pumpkin carving, there are a number of pumpkin carving events happening in the area over the Halloween period. Bury Ranger Service will be holding a number of these events across the borough. Including events at Stanley Park, Openshaw Park, Manchester Road Park, Coronation Park and Phillips Park. For a full listing of pumpkin carving events see our events page. If that’s not enough creativity for you if you dare, get down to Burrs Country Park for a morning  of creepy, crafty fun on the 23rd or Bury Transport Museum are holding a kids craft workshop on the 24th. It’s set to be a creepy and creative Halloween this year!

If you’re up for something really scary this year then Whitehead Park’s Halloween Quest is for you! Solve riddles and follow the terrifying trail. Or even turn your kids into little witches and wizards as they brew their own potions! And if you need something to light your way on the trail then the Friends of Nuttall Park has just the thing for you. This years’ Lantern Parade will be held on 27th October. There will be crafts, games refreshments, face painting as well as a pumpkin carving competition and of course lantern making and then finally the big lantern parade. It’s sure to be one for the books.

If music’s more your thing Radcliffe’s Civic Suite are playing host to Rocksector Records on the 27th. All the bands on their label will be showcased to celebrate Halloween. Bands such as Fury UK, Incassum and Tygers of Pan Tang but be warned, these bands aren’t for the faint hearted - playing everything from rock to death metal. If that’s not enough macabre music for you Longfield Suite, Prestwich are playing host to tribute acts of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath on the same night.

Now on to the more adult affairs. If all you’re after is a few relaxing drinks then East Lancs Railway’s Halloween (Pale) Ale Trail is the best way to enjoy some scary stories over some of the best ales in the village. Take a steam train from Bury to Ramsbottom taking in some of the area’s best watering holes along the way.

If you fancy seeing something gruesome this Halloween head to The Met in Bury where there will be a series of ghost stories. The 150th anniversary of the birth of M R James brings the story Count Magnus to life in this production. It’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!
