A record number of organisations have competed for the title of Britain’s most gay-friendly employer, according to gay rights campaigner Stonewall, and this year Bury Council is ranked 82nd.

This is the second year that Bury Council has been ranked 82nd in the national ranking, but this year we have increased our score from 122/200 to 140/200.

The diversity champion announced Bury’s ranking in the 2010 Workplace Equality Index at an awards ceremony in London. The national success of the list shows how tolerance and diversity in sexual orientation has become a mainstream issue for Britain’s workplaces.

The index was compiled by assessing organisations’ submissions on equality practices and considering anonymous feedback from over 7,000 employee surveys. Every organisation in this year’s top 100 offered diversity training that covered lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) issues, and collected monitoring data on the sexual orientation of their employees.

Councillor Jack Walton, Executive Member for Resource and Performance, said: “I am pleased to see that Bury has maintained it’s place in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index for 2010. We faced tough competition this year as there were a greater number of entries, and the criteria were tougher to meet. It is great to see that Bury Council has continued to be recognised as an employer which promotes equality and diversity in the work place."
