Business Solutions Bury College has launched a range of new higher apprenticeship frameworks which demonstrates their commitment to delivering work-based education pathways. The college is now one of the largest providers of higher apprenticeships in Greater Manchester.

With university tuition fees rising, government funded apprenticeships are becoming a real alternative for driven individuals who want to study at university level without the burden of taking out a loan. Almost 10,000 people started a higher apprenticeship in 2013 and they are fast becoming the apprenticeship of choice for employees who are looking to gain a higher education qualification to progress in their career.

Like traditional apprenticeships, higher apprenticeships are work based and combine on the job training with independent study. Available at level 4 and 5, qualifications are equivalent to a higher education certificate or foundation degree. They are designed for people working at or towards a more senior level who want to gain a university level qualification in their chosen field. The qualification is great news for employees who want to combine employment with study.

Sean Gartland, 44, talks of his decision to enrol on the Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management at Bury College: “I wanted to move into the role of registered manager but the level 5 qualification was expensive. Because the higher apprenticeship is government funded it makes the course affordable and I can fit it around my current role, through flexible online learning and assignments.” Sean currently works at Shardale Ltd, Specialised therapeutic community for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, as the Trainee Registered Manager. He added: “The course compliments my work responsibilities and assists with solidifying compliance, legislations and CQC guidelines and regulations, therefore increasing my confidence and leadership skills."

Sandra Morton, Deputy Principal of Bury College said, “Higher apprenticeships will play a key role in the reshaping of our economy through the development of higher level skills in the workplace. The development of the range of higher apprenticeship frameworks available through Bury College demonstrates our commitment to respond to priority skill demands. We have a history of high performing apprenticeship provision and higher education qualifications, so this is a natural development for us. We have had fantastic support from employers in helping us shape the curriculum for each of the higher apprentice frameworks and we are anticipating high demand.”
