The plug-in car grant administered by OLEV – the Office for Low Emissions, that was designed to boost the uptake of electric powered vehicles looks like being scrapped! The Department for Transport is looking to stop the Plug-in Car Grant Subsidy.

The grant currently offers £3,500 off the price of eligible new cars, those being the most ‘green’ plug-in vehicles. The grant is typically applied for by the manufacturer on behalf of the customer and acts as a straight forward discount off the list price.

As well as cars there are similar grants available for new plug-in vehicles that qualify including vans, motor cycles and mopeds.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said that he expects the grants to go completely in due course. However, the government intends to roll out policy for far greater availability of charging points throughout the country to facilitate the expansion of electric plug-in vehicles.

Because of the substantial benefits of plug-in electric vehicles to companies and the greater public, plus the environmental gains that will accrue, companies will continue to invest in these vehicles and government policy will support that.
