Jennifer first gained international recognition in 2002, when, aged 12, she became the youngest-ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and the youngest major prizewinner in the Menuhin International Violin Competition. In demand as a soloist and recitalist all over the world, she is known as an artist of exceptional integrity and depth, whilst her ability to “hold an audience spellbound” (The Strad) and “luminous beauty of tone” (The Observer) have established her as one of the most exciting artists performing today.
Spring is in the air, with the youthful Sonata No.5 by Beethoven, and the last work composed by Lili Boulanger before her death, D’un matin de Printemps which form the first half of this concert. One of his most popular preludes, here arranged for violin and piano, Debussy’s glittering vision of The submerged cathedral transports you to the mythical island of Ys, off the coast of Brittany, where a submerged cathedral rises from the sea on clear mornings when the water is transparent. A haunting and timely new work by Jennifer’s father Jeremy follows, before we hear Grieg’s third and final violin sonata, a powerful and expressive work. Grieg’s violin sonatas were some of his own favourite works, saying that they represent…’periods in my development – the first naïve, rich in ideas, the second nationalistic; the third with a wider horizon.’
