On our first trip to Guernsey we stayed at the 4 star Duke of Richmond Hotel which was nice. During said stay we learned that the Old Government House Hotel is owned by the same company and therefore decided to give it a try which we did this time.
And how was the experience at the OGH? Very friendly and well trained staff from A to Z. Great location - only a few steps from the Harbour. Nicely decorated room. Cozy and clean. The Hotel has lots of charm and the breakfast room is just one of a kind or in short just fantastic. Great breakfast buffet. With the aforementioned reasons it is clear that we will be back.

Highly recommended!

The Old Government House is a hotel that was built a very long time ago. It was built in 1796 as the Governor's house and then converted to a hotel in 1858.

The hotel appears to have been added to in sections over time. It has an unusual stately character that is hard to describe other than elegant,

The staff - all of them to a person - were fantastic. I had jotted down names, but the slip was lost on our way back home. They went out of their way for us in a manner I have never experienced. One example was that they took us by car to a restaurant they recommended, and then came again by car to get us from a different restaurant as the first had ignored our reservation.

The desk associate whose name I hopefully remember was Brianna. The gentleman who sat at a desk across the lobby from the fron desk was extraordinally helpful. I can not say enoug nice things about him, but I unfortunately misplaced his name. If he reads this review, I hope he knows his efforts and those of Brianna and all of the other staff were greatly appreciated.

We ate many of our meals at the hotel. Every meal was very good, breakfast, lunch and dinner. One of the evenings we had dinner, we enjoyed the piano and singing of Paul Tongs. As we had a special date we celebrated one night, he played and sang a song I requested that my wife and I really love.

Our room faced the harbor with a balcony. Showing how old world charm can be enhanced by new technology, the balcony was protected by a full width window that could be raised entirely our of view, You could also lower a screen when the window was open if insects were encountered - which they were not.

While business brought us to Guernsey, our stay at the Old Government House made it seem like a vacation.

to one of our favourite hotels, OGH continues to give brilliant service. Part of the Red Carnation Group of upmarket hotels, staff are highly trained, friendly and helpful, without being overly deferential - giving guests the feeling that they are being really pampered.

A short stay this time because of work pressures, we were lucky to enjoy really hot weather, mostly recharging batteries lazing by the pool, where Piers catered for every whim with fluffy white towels, drinks and snacks (try the steak sandwich) and then drinks in the bar and dinner in the Brasserie, which is (there is no other word) commanded by that most excellent of Maitre D's Ken, who has eyes everywhere ensuring that every one of 50 or so diners are being looked after to the max. Really good and not pretentious wines and food - though the menu has been pared to some extent, it still caters for all tastes (but please, please reinstate Ken's Steak Diane - a heavenly dish).

An excellent room, not large but with sea view, balcony and every facility that should be supplied by a 5 star hotel.

A really lovely, if too short, break - thank you once again OGH. We will assuredly be back.

Arrived on Friday to a very warm welcome from the staff and management. The room was very clean and extremely well kept. As I was there for business the staff and the management could not have gone further to make my stay any better. It's a shame I was working as I would love to get to see the Ireland.

As for the Ireland. I dropped my phone as I got into the car and thought that's is gone for good for good (as it would be in London). I was told don't worry someone would hand it in ( yah right, what planet are you from). I was then told someone walking alone the road found it and handed it into the hotel reception. Talk about renewing my faith in my fellow man. What a great place to live. I can not wait to go back again and again thank you for a wonderful stay.

Absolutely great hotel, with the best staff ever. Rooms are great, nice and comfortable. Centrally located close to the main business area. Nice gym and great household services. Breakfast could be improved. A place to remember! One of my favourite hotels in the world for historical reasons and great service!

Truly luxurious hotel. Pool amazing and staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. They organised a hire car for us, offered to book restaurants and carried luggage up and down. The sparkling wine on arrival was a nice touch too although it may have been less cramped in the library rather than the reception area which is quite small to have 3 newly arrived couples having a drink in it!
We had a wonderful stay and would not hesitate to stay again.

The hotel met all our expectations, rooms were traditional well kept and extremely comfortable. Facilities for a small leading hotel were excellent and nothing was too much trouble. The food and beverage team led by David ably assisted by Ken, Daniel and Jozef were fantastic and particularly accommodating to my two girls making it a memorable stay whether dining in the relaxed atmosphere of the Brasserie or the more exotic and cosy Governors Indian restaurant. The afternoon tea was also excellent with a wide variety of gorgeous pastries and teas. This is a hotel which meets the highest requirements from a business, couples or family perspective, highly recommended.

It was a first time visit for me to the Island and the Hotel. I found the Hotel staff friendly and helpful and the Hotel conveniently located to town. The food was excellent and the room comfortable and great to have Air Con which some older Hotels don't have. The whole visit was truly enhanced by agreeable surroundings, reliable cuisine and staff that (if engaged) were happy to smile and respond which is not always true of 5* hotels.

A really great short break over a Bank Holiday.

The button on the phone that says "whatever whenever" summed up the OGH. Outstanding customer service every minute of every day. Can't wait to return next year. Special thanks to Jozef who epitomises Gustave Hs sentiments that it's important to "anticipate the needs of the customer before the needs are needed". Finally Paul Tongs was the icing on the cake - loved every note. Thank you to everyone at the OGH.

I took my 8 year old daughter to stay for 1 night at OGH for a birthday treat. She thought the hotel was perfect (which is the main thing). However, she has not recently (perhaps not ever, I can't recall) stayed in a 5* hotel, whereas I have. My view is that the hotel is lovely but has some flaws. Good points were: 1) nice heated outdoor pool (although it is not that big, it is big enough). 2) Lovely meal in the Curry House, and the waiter (I think Gustav) was extremely helpful and charming. 3) Breakfast was very nice although not such a big selection of choices as I would expect in a 5* hotel. 4) The staff left a beautiful large piece of cake and a birthday card for my daughter in our room and 5) all staff very kind to my daughter and made a big effort with her (and were of course very nice to me as well), 6) Lovely L'Occiaine products in the bathrooms. Slightly negative points: 1) we arrived early from our ferry just to drop off luggage and were told the room was ready (this seemed unlikely as it was only 9.30am, and I hadn't expected the room to be ready at all) and then told it wasn't. 2) We went to wander off and came back about 12 or so and waited at reception. Couple in front of us were checking in and were offered sparkling wine or lemonade. We then asked if our room was ready (it was) but we were not offered any sparking wine or lemonade which I thought was quite odd but was too embarrassed to ask! (this was a different lady to the one at 9.30, perhaps the lady wrongly thought we had been given it at 9.30) 3) We then went to our room and it didn't have all the things we had ticked on the customer preference form (DVD ad children's videos) and it did not have a children's sized dressing gown as advertised on the website. The DVD player arrived but the DVDs did not (I didn't ask for them as my daughter in fact never asked to watch a DVD). I called room service to ask for the child sized dressing gown and it came. 4) Website advertises kids eat free if with a paying adult in any of the restaurants but in fact they charge kids half price. 5) Website advertised that £50 dining credit will be applied to your booking if you book direct and that you will receive confirmation of this on your booking confirmation but it was not in the booking confirmation - I had to send 2 emails before I departed to get confirmation of this £50 credit in writing by email. 6) quite a few minor errors made at reception eg telling me wrong time for our dinner reservation, needing a copy of a credit card receipt from me the next day because their machine had not printed one and they hadn't noticed the previous day. None of these individual points are significant but added together I was left with the general feeling that although well intentioned and kind, the service at the hotel needs improving. The hotel did have a wedding going on while we were staying so to be fair it may be that on this particular day they were a bit stretched. Also our room (standard double, room 136) was really quite small - it was fine but smaller than I expected. Also, note that children under 16 are not permitted to use the jacuzzi in the spa (I had thought that might be the case, but it doesn't actually say so on the website or in the hotel information book so far as I could see, but I found out by asking a member of staff, who was very helpful and found out for me).
