Just off the M61 and conveniently placed for just about everything, Bolton Whites hotel is easy to find thanks to plenty of signposts, and the fact it forms part of University Of Bolton stadium (still shown on some brown road signs as ‘The Macron Stadium’) which means its distinctive structure can be seen from a distance. The car park is large and I liked the quirky arc shape which greets you as you walk to reception which is housed in a welcoming open space complete with glass elevator and a sturdy open plan staircase in the middle of the floor. When I arrived there was a queue of prospective guests but a second receptionist quickly joined and we were processed before you could say ‘Bolton Wanders’. Our room was on the first floor facing out to the car park which I was happy with but I gather from the hotel web page that some rooms have views into the stadium which would have been different. The room was clean, well appointed with the bathroom offering a shower and a bath with plenty of clean towels and toiletries. On the same floor is a bar which was showing football from one of the pay sports channels and the restaurant which I think was closed so it may be worth checking the hours before you get there. (It also served a very appetising self serve breakfast next morning.)
The hotel is part of the Middlebrook Leisure Park retail zone which includes a large Tesco right next door and an Asda within walking distance. (Both had petrol stations.) There are also an array of shops including Home Sense, Wilko, Argos, Next etc. as well as eating places like Subway, Chiquito, ASK Italian, Nando’s, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee and more – and film fans are catered for with the local twelve screen Vue cinema. (Most shops close by 7.30 pm)
What I liked was the design of the place. This is a hotel that is just a little different. Staff were helpful and eager to please and one the one night I stopped over, the place was quiet and a good night’s sleep came easy. The cost was reasonable and it had a look and feel that was much better than many more expensive hotels I’ve stayed in. The only word of warning I would give is that if you are planning on staying it may be worth checking out if there are any events on at the stadium as it could impact traffic and parking.

Fantastic value for money, spacious clean rooms. Good gym and pool facilities. Staff were friendly, location was ideal as it was close to the motorway. Would recommend. Also convenient having a retail park close by with lots of shops.

The room was nice and spacious with a lovely bathroom and powerful shower. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The hotel was quite quiet considering the car park was near enough full and there was a boxing match or something being shown and we didn't hear any noise whatsoever from our room. The hotel is also in a great location to restaurants and a retail park within a few mins walk or drive. Amazing experience.

Bolton Whites is the part of the Bolton Wanders football ground. Some rooms have a direct view of the pitch, but to don't have to like football to stay there. It's very easily accessible by road or rail and not too far out of the city centre and there's a large car park.

We had opted for a premium, non-pitch view room which was clean and comfortable. But like so many hotels, it was lacking in both draw and wardrobe space. There was no safe in the room. As well as the football pitch it's adjacent to a shopping centre and a Tesco Extra.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is a bit limited in choice, but enough to set you up for the day. There's a fitness centre that's included - if you book direct with the hotel. If you want to stay somewhere in the area, it's well worth considering.
