York Bookshop to shut after 50 years

The shop, specialising in Christian books, is set to shut in the new year. The shop started off its life in Walmgate under Dick Rollinson in 1961, it was then taken over by the Bingham family who moved it to Fossgate. The shop stayed in the family and is run by Andy. Although now the shop is under the banner of the Christian Bookshop Company.

The closure is being blamed on the rapidly changing and modernising of the trade of bookselling. Technology such as the Amazon Kindle and other tablets has caused a huge decline in the industry, with an incresing demand for online e-books and e-readers. We at the best of thank the Barbican Bookshop for all they have done for the city.
