With winter drawing ever closer, heating bills rising and some uncharacteristically nasty crime in York, we have come up with a set of tips to keep everyone warm, safe and sound this winter.

Your safety should always be at the front of your mind however with the nights drawing in and the pavements and roads becoming icier it is important that you are even more vigilant of possible threats.

1. Don't leave home without a phone. If you fall or slip on the ice or skid of the road in your car you will need to get help quickly. There is no guarantee you will be found so ensure you have a means of contacting the emergency services.

2. Don't walk on your own along dark roads alone without being extra careful. If you slip, people won't find you as easily and likewise, particularly hen intoxicated, you can become a target for crime.

3. LOCK UP. Many people travel around the Christmas and winter period so make sure that your windows and doors are shut AND the curtains are drawn.

4. Ensure your care is "Winter Ready". This means just ensuring any noises or issues in your vehicle are looked after before you go for drives in the winter, possibly ensure you have winter tires on for extra grip. Likewise it is imperative to be prepared with a blanket, a battery radio, a torch, some snacks, and a means of communication. If you crash, break down, or go off-road, the chances are you will be temporarily stranded and you will need to make sure you are safe and warm.

5. HEATING. some little heating tips to keep you warm and save money.
i. Get a halogen heater or if you can a gas heater, which is portable and can be put into any room. This saves having to have the heating on in every room.
ii. With your portable heater, pre-heat your bedroom and then switch it off again once you're in the room.
iii. Get the damp out of your house (open windows) this saves money in the long run as well as allowing the heat to be more effective.
iv. GET A BIG JACKET. A wool jacket or a big "puffer" jacket will work wonders when you have your heating off.

ENJOY YOUR CHRISTMAS AND STAY SAFE AND WARM!!
