10. Simon Dyson- European tour golfer from fulford. The 1st of the sportsmen in this list. He once finished 6th at the US PGA championship in 2007 and is a firm local favourite.

9. Mark Addy- currently starring as Hercules in the bbc drama Atlantis, he has also starred in The Full Monty and A Knights Tale.

8. Dan Hirst. One of Hollywood's best stuntmen was in fact born in York. He has been a stuntman in films such as Troy, Batman (dark knight series), World War Z, and Blood Diamond

7. Alcuin of York- a Middle Ages scholar and teacher, was a master at St Peters school in York and us considered on of the most intelligent men of his era

6. Jonny Bairstow- England test cricketer. Johnny went to St. Peter's school in York and has since played for 4 years in the Yorkshire side as a batsmen and a keeper. He has scored hundreds at county level however is yet to make his debut international hundred. He is currently on the ashes tour in Australia

He is best known for his chocolate and crucially pioneering social reform and equality in the workplace and for his workforce. 3. John Barry- a musician and conductor from York. He is most famous for composing 11 of the James Bond 007 soundtracks. Most notably the iconic dr no soundtrack. He also composed the themes to Midnight Cowboy and Out of Africa. In 1999 he was given a OBE for services to music

2. Dame Judy Dench. Dame Judy is York's most famous actress or actor. She has been involved in almost all Shakespeare's plays with the royal Shakespeare company. Our favorite leading lady was most notably cast as M in James Bond films (all after and inc goldeneye). She was at her best in the tragic end of sky fall. Away from bond she has also starred in Mrs Brown, Iris, and Chocolat. If all this wasn't enough she has many notable awards including an academy award.

1. Guy Fawkes. Yes you guessed it, a man known throughout the world as one of the key conspirators in the gunpowder plot. He was educated at St. Peter's school in York however he was a catholic and resented the king and parliament for their Protestant doctrine. He and his conspirators using explosives aimed to assassinate the key political figures including the king James in order to revolutionize the British political system and promote their catholic cause. He was caught, charged with high treason and hung drawn and quartered for his crimes.
