In Wrexham we have several areas which are prone to flooding and flash floods, such as:

Areas around Bangor-On-Dee

The weir at the bridge

Hope river

The back lanes from Borras to Marford

The roundabout by Cross Lanes

The waterfall in Bersham

The Alyn river in Rossett

The Esless Farm river in Rhostyllen

World's End from Llangollen side

The Dunks near St Giles Parish Church

Hightown Road

Caia Road

Cefn Road

A528 road out of Overton to Eyton

It stands to reason that if you live near to a river you are at greater risk of flooding.

The Environment Agency website is a useful resource that displays a flood risk map showing the possible extent of flooding in your area .

Simply visit the website and key in your post code and you will see if there is any significant risk to your home.

If you live in an area that is at risk of flooding, it is impossible to completely flood proof your home, but there are steps you can take to ensure minimal damage including:

  • Stock up on Sandbags or flood sacks
  • Purchase flood boards that can be fitted when a flood is expected
  • Raise door thresholds - keeping shallow water out
  • Move valuables and possessions upstairs or to a higher level
  • Check the pointing of your exterior walls and apply water proof sealant
  • Have rugs instead of fitted carpets
  • Raise electrical socket to at least 1.5 metres above ground floor level
  • Mount TV and Hi-fi speakers on the wall
  • Fit non-return valves to all drains and water and inlet pipes.
  • Purchase air brick covers to prevent water getting in.
  • Write down a useful list of contacts e.g. home insurers, floodline
  • Prepare a flood kit containing personal information, medication etc.
  • Keep Informed.

By registering with The Environment Agency's Flood Alert System, you will receive notifications of potential flood warnings giving you enough time to build up your defences.

Don't wait until it's too late or hope for the best - be prepared!
