Join in the celebrations as the Olympic Torch comes to Wrexham

As the UK as a whole gears up for the Olympic Games this summer, details of Wrexham’s torchbearers and the route the torch will take have been revealed.

Starting at Mold Rd at 7.30am, 30th May the torch will wind its way through the town finishing at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct at 9.07am and will be the only chance most of us will ever get to see the torch in all its glory. Celebrations and special events will take place for the rest of the day to mark this once in a lifetime opportunity after the torch leaves the aqueduct at 9.30am to continue on its journey around the country.

The torch will be carried by several of the local community’s heroes both young and old, including some of Wrexham’s year 11 school pupils, who will all join the other 8000 lucky flame carriers across the UK, which includes a 100-year old woman and Britain’s richest man. And they will all carry the torch within 10 miles of 95% of the country’s population so all of us will be able to enjoy sharing the occasion with our local community.

Although precise details of the fun and games awaiting us in Wrexham haven’t been revealed yet, they’re sure to be something special and bring the town together. The borough council wants to invite the whole town to come and take in the excitement and will post details of the festivities planned nearer the time.

And the flame will be praying for a smooth, uneventful trip through Wrexham, as it will be carried on a chair-lift, rowed up the Thames and flung down a zip-wire during its travels before coming to rest at the Olympic Stadium in London!

The route of the torch relay in full will be:

Mold Road (A541) – 7.25am, Regent Street (A541) – 7.31am, Grosvenor Road -7.32am, Powell Road – 7.36am, Chester Street – 7.38am, Llwyn Isaf/Guildhall Green – 7.40am, Chester Street – 8.13am, High Street – 8.16am, Town Hill – 8.18am, Bridge Street (A5152) – 8.19am, Ruabon Road (A5152) – 8.22am, Wrexham Road (A5152) – 8.28am, Llangollen Road – (By the sign to Acrefair) – 8.44am, Station Road – 9.02am, Trevor Basin – 9.06am, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – 9.07am

So come and join us on 30th May as we show the Olympic Torch the best of Wrexham. It promises to be a brilliant day!
