An article published by the Worthing Herald has this afternoon revealed that Worthing Council is advertising ALL of its theatres for sale.
This means that interest is being sought for all four of Worthing’s theatres: the Connaught Theatre, Ritz Cinema, Pavilion Theatre, and Assembly Hall.
The advert is to be published in The Stage magazine on May 27th, and will ask for responses to be issued before Friday 10th June. Interested parties will then have to submit a detailed business plan for consideration by the Theatres Working Group.
The Group was set up to help guide the uncertain future of Worthing’s theatres last year. Worthing Council has said of the situation previously that the theatres cost the local authorities £3,000 a day on subsidies, and that the £1.2 million yearly cost is no longer viable.
However, rather than feeling a sense of doom about the situation, Worthing residents should feel the urgency and importance of ‘buying local’. If the community wishes to retain its homegrown businesses and services such as the theatres and cinema, then the community must make their importance known!
