The Cemetery Club (July 3 - 7) Worthing Connaught Theatre
Three feuding widows invite audiences to join the hilarity of The Cemetery Club.
TV favourite Anne Charleston leads the cast of The Cemetery Club at Worthing’s Connaught Theatre, a comedy about three widowed friends who meet for monthly bickering and to gossip with their late husbands.
Anne is known to millions for her roles as Madge Bishop in Neighbours and Lily Butterfield in Emmerdale. She is joined by her fellow cast-members from last year’s summer play Five Blue Haired Ladies Sitting on a Green Park Bench, Shirley-Anne Field and Anita Harris. The trio are accompanied by Debbie Norman and The Bill’s Peter Ellis.
Shirley-Anne originally became a household name playing opposite Sir Laurence Olivier in The Entertainer and starring in The War Lover with Steve McQueen and Robert Wagner. Recent television roles have included Dalziel and Pascoe, Where the Heart Is and Last of the Summer Wine. She has most recently completed filming The Kid with James Fox and Rupert Friend.
Anita has enjoyed an award-winning and chart-topping career which has seen her as a famous Grizabella in CATS, starring in Carry On Follow That Camel and Carry On Doctor as well as on television with Morecambe and Wise, David Nixon and Tommy Cooper. Her most recent role was as Verity Lake in the pilot of The Casebooks of Verity Lake.
The play focuses on Anne, Shirley-Anne and Anita’s characters, Ida, Lucille and Doris, who have monthly meetings at Ida’s New York house where they feud over tea before visiting their husbands’ graves. The trio are primarily united by their widowhood but their differing outlooks on life cause hilarious disagreements. Lucille fancies herself as a flamboyant swinger, Doris is a traditional matronly widow and Ida is somewhere in-between but when charismatic butcher Sam meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave, he changes their lives and opinions forever.
