Based on a true story, this dramatisation tells of the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant, when 850 female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination. When factory worker Rita (Sally Hawkins), is coerced into attending a meeting with Fords head of industrial relations she is outraged by the lack of respect shown towards her and the other female employees. With humour, common sense and courage, Rita and her colleagues take on their bosses, an increasingly belligerent local community and eventually the government as their intelligence and unpredictability proves the match for any of their male opponents. Daring to stand up and push boundaries, these spirited women took a stand for what was right and changed a system that no one wanted to admit was broken. From the director of Calendar Girls, this stars a wealth of British talent, including Miranda Richardson, Geraldine James, Rosamund Pike and Bob Hoskins.
