Based on the best selling novel by Michael Connelly, this follows Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey), a criminal defense lawyer who operates out of the back of his Lincoln town car. Haller has spent most of his career defending garden-variety criminals, until he lands the case of his career: defending Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), a suave Beverly Hills playboy accused of rape and attempted murder. Roulet’s rich, overbearing mother will do anything to clear her son's name, while Roulet claims that the charge is just an attempt to get some money out of him. Digging into the case, Haller reveals a blacker picture of Roulet's personality and evidence of a sinister past, including links to a notorious unsolved double homicide, turning the seemingly straightforward case into a deadly game of survival.
