Apollo Insurance Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, died recently at the age of 82, but at the time of the 1969 mission he and his fellow astronauts were concerned about who would provide for their families if they perished.
Back then life insurance for astronauts was not available so they autographed a number of space related postcards, the logic being if they died on the mission their value would ‘rocket’ providing a means of support for the families.
The practice continued until the Apollo 16 mission, but with hindsight was probably unnecessary, as in 1986 the families of the Challenger disaster victims were largely supported by funds from the American government and public. Interestingly, one Challenger astronaut had managed to arrange life cover with Lloyds paying out $1m.
