Courtney Pine (July 14, 7.45pm) Worthing Pavilion Theatre
Jazz trailblazer presents live set of latest bass clarinet album.
Courtney Pine presents the live set of his new work Europa at Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre on July 14, in which he creates a reflection of the vibrance, innovation and spirit of the European countries he has visited during his career.
No one embodies the dramatic transformation in the British jazz scene over the past twenty years than Courtney Pine. Known primarily as a saxophonist, Courtney leads the new generation of artists with his trailblazing and innovative approach to the genre which has seen him produce albums including Closer to Home, Modern Day Jazz Stories and Resistance.
Since Courtney’s arrival on the British music scene with the intention of presenting jazz to a wider audience, his research and performances took him around Europe where the seeds of the Europa project began to take root but it was not until recently that his Europe-inspired ideas began to take shape.
Courtney’s latest recording and the live show incorporate his lifetime of travelling experiences and features tracks inspired by Gregorian chants with Scandinavian, Celtic, Spanish, Hungarian and Mediterranean melodies and rhythms which evolve during the show like a map to reflects each country’s development.
Europa is Courtney’s first set to be entirely performed on bass clarinet during his 24 years of award-winning music-making and represents the latest chapter in the evolution of one of this country’s most original musicians.
