Take action this Mental Health Awareness Week

Led by the Mental Health Foundation, the theme of this year’s campaign is ‘Action’, recognising that, while awareness is important, real change happens when people take simple, practical steps – for themselves, for others, and for their communities.

John Denley, Wolverhampton’s Director of Public Health, said: “Around 1 in 5 adults in the UK experience mental health problems like anxiety or depression, with even higher rates among young people. Because this affects so many of us, most people will know or care about someone who is having a difficult time with their mental health. That’s why small actions really can make a big difference.

“There are many ways you can get involved. For yourself, you can do something that supports your wellbeing, such as going for a walk, taking a mindful moment or reaching out to someone you trust. For someone else, you can check in with them, listen without judgement, or help them find the right support. And for your community, you can share helpful resources, join local events, or help create safe spaces where mental health can be talked about openly.”

A number of activities are taking place across the city during Mental Health Awareness Week, including a Wellbeing Support Event hosted by Wolves Foundation at Molineux Stadium next Thursday (14 May) from 3pm to 7pm. People are invited to drop in to connect and discover practical ways to support their mental wellbeing, meet local organisations and wellbeing services, and take part in mood enhancing activities.

Rethink will be holding a week long event at The Hub at Wolverhampton railway station from Monday to Sunday, 11 to 17 May, offering drop‑in support, activities and conversations, including help finding local services, wellbeing groups and activities, anti‑stigma conversations, and opportunities to connect with organisations.

Meanwhile, throughout May, including Mental Health Awareness Week, local libraries are hosting friendly activities such as crafts, book groups, games, coffee mornings, IT help and gentle exercise, helping people connect with others and support their wellbeing.
