Bright Path CIC has launched Creative Comforts, an initiative providing free, ready-to-use craft packs for children on the Children’s Ward at Russells Hall Hospital.

The project was inspired by Bright Path founder Emma Whitehouse, who recognised that hospital stays can involve long periods of waiting, uncertainty and boredom, particularly for children who are unable to leave their beds or access the playroom.

Each craft pack contains the materials needed to complete a creative activity, giving children something enjoyable to focus on and an opportunity to spend quality time with their parents or carers. The first 95 craft packs have already been delivered to the ward and have received a lovely response from children, families and hospital staff. Some of the animals created by the children have even been added to the ward’s Autumn display.

The ward’s play facilitator shared how valuable it is to have complete activity packs readily available for patients, particularly when children are isolating or unable to access the playroom. She also highlighted how parents enjoy joining in with the crafts, creating opportunities for families to spend positive time together during what can be a stressful experience.

The Children’s Ward has approximately 33 beds and cares for babies, toddlers, school-aged children and teenagers. Bright Path is working to develop a range of activities that can be adapted for different ages and abilities, helping to make Creative Comforts as inclusive and accessible as possible. Following the positive response to the first packs, the ward has expressed interest in hosting an initial Halloween-themed creative workshop towards the end of October.

Emma said: “It’s been lovely to hear that the children have enjoyed the activities and to know that some of their creations are now part of the ward’s Autumn display. “When a child is in hospital, something as simple as having a craft activity to look forward to can offer a welcome distraction. It also gives parents and children a chance to enjoy doing something together, away from the worries of hospital life. “Our hope is to make Creative Comforts a regular part of the support available to children and families, particularly those who are unable to access the playroom.”

Bright Path CIC is now seeking funding, donations and community support to help provide a regular supply of free craft packs and develop future creative workshops.
