Know how to protect your property against fraud

July is Scams Awareness Month

HRJ Foreman Laws have seen an increase in cases where fraudsters impersonate genuine property owners. The fraudster may attempt to raise money using the property as security or to sell the property. Whether you are a buyer or seller, you need to be on guard against this.

The HM Land Registry is raising awareness of the actions you can take. You can sign-up for alerts if an application is made to change the register of your property, for example if someone tries to use your property details for a mortgage.

You are more at risk if your property:

• is rented out
• is empty
• is mortgage-free
• is not registered with HM Land Registry.

You can read more from the Government site here: https://www.gov.uk/protect-land-property-from-fraud

The conveyancing teams at HRJ Foreman Laws also remain vigilant and always follow best conveyancing practice. They operate to the highest standards of practice and integrity required by the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS).

Please also be aware, HRJ Foreman Laws will never contact you by email to inform you of changes to our bank details. Fraudsters impersonate law firms to trick clients of law firms into sending monies to them. If you receive an email that appears to come from HRJ Foreman Laws providing different bank details to the ones we supplied at the outset of the matter or indicating a change in the bank details, contact the solicitor dealing with your matter by telephone immediately. You should not reply to the email or act on anything within it.
