The Tax Man Cometh

Many of you will have received a letter recently stating that your Self Assessment Return is required to be completed and filed.

I am guessing that a lot of you put it in a "safe place" to be dealt with later - much later - (and probably hoping that it's never!)

For the average PAYE employee with no other income sources, doing your own tax return is not too difficult.

It gets complicated when you have rental income, foreign income, you sold some shares or you run your own business. A lot of people can manage to get their returns done but many more don't like doing it, or would rather spend their weekends doing something a far sight more interesting!

If you want to do it yourself, have a look at the link here to a comprehensive Self Assessment Tax Return Checklist - SA Checklist 2010/11 which will help you collate the information you need to complete your return quickly.

If you don't want to do it yourself, then feel free to get in touch!

And remember, it's easier to deal with the things you hate sooner rather than later - you don't want to be doing it in January and worrying about the large HMRC penalties you may receive if you file late.
